Conservation Project of Painted Rock Carvings – World Cultural Heritage Site

“Dyzu” rock carving Buddha (with 1007 hands, one eye in each hand), 7.7 x 12.5 m². Rock Carvings are a series of Chinese religious sculptures and carvings, dating back as far as 7th century A.D., depicting and influenced by Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist beliefs.  The carvings were listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site; however, they are not in good condition, the paint is flaking and some golden cover leaf fall off. The knowledge of the materials used is fundamental for making proper conservation strategy. By studying the binding media in the paints by GC/MS, animal glue and non-drying oil rapeseed oil (which is unusual) were identified.
