A Collection Analysed with XRD, XRF and FTIR in Order to Create a Database

This work presents a systematic characterization of historic inorganic pigments with respect to their crystallographic structure, main components, and trace elements. The results are compiled in a computer database containing the experimentally obtained information.

Identification of Synthetic Organic Pigments in Paintings of the Early 20th Century by FTIR, XRF and Optical Microscopy

Synthetic organic pigments are known as the largest group of colorants used in contemporary artists´ paints. Thus, investigation of those pigments in works of art has become increasingly important. Synthetic organic colorants of the institute collection have been studied by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and energy dispersive x-ray fluorescence analysis (XRF); all data were compiled in reference databases. Furthermore an approach is presented to facilitate classification of unknown samples of organic pigments by multivariate statistical analysis of their FTIR spectra. Based on the analytical results obtained, a comprehensive study on the use of synthetic organic pigments and lakes in paints of the early 20th century was encouraged. Results of this study offer an in-depth understanding of the incidence and acceptance of those colorants especially in artists' paints.

Pigment Analysis by Means of Micro-Raman Spectroscopy

The existing data base of the FTIR, XRF, and XRD spectra is continuously upgraded with Raman spectra of the pigments belonging to the material collection. Up to now 40 blue pigments, phtalocyanine, ultramarine as well as prussianblue pigments were analysed systematically by the micro-Raman spectroscopy.
